Helen Atkin Riding for the Disabled are looking for more volunteers

Friendly, reasonably fit volunteers are in demand to swell the ranks of volunteers working with the Buxton-based Helen Atkin Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group.

Reliable people of all ages - ranging from those seeking valuable experience at the start of their career to active retirees - are needed to join the group, which provides safe and enjoyable riding for disabled children and adults who live in the High Peak.

Help is sought both to lead horses and ponies and to assist riders for the twice-weekly riding sessions, held most Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and noon at Buxton Riding School, Fern Lane.

"We're keen to hear from anyone who would like to be part of the small but enthusiastic band of volunteers who make it possible for disabled people of all ages to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of horse riding," said group chairman Wendy Howe.

"Not only do our riders benefit from a sense of achievement and freedom, as well as increased confidence and self-esteem, our helpers gain great satisfaction from being involved in a worthwhile activity that enhances quality of life for so many people.

"Experience with horses and/or physically and mentally disabled people is a bonus, but not essential, as full training is given. It's just as important to be willing to learn, be prepared to work as part of a close-knit team and to turn up with a smile to make the sessions enjoyable for riders and volunteers alike.

"We'd love to hear from anyone who can commit at least two hours per week or fortnight - everyone from young people wanting valuable experience before they embark on careers in care, management or with horses and animals to retired people who want to use the skills they already have or are looking to learn new ones."
