Cricket Festival bowls girls over

Teams who competed in the annual Marple Girls Cricket Festival recently

On Sunday 14th May Marple Cricket Club welcomed 168 girls representing cricket clubs from Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire.  The occasion was the annual Marple Girls Cricket Festival which has been running at the Bowden Lane ground for over ten years.

18 teams took part on the day with the players being split into an under 11 or under 13 category across 8 pitches.  The teams were made up of a mixture of experienced players and new players who were experiencing competitive cricket matches for the first time.

After over four hours of competition, Heyside CC from Lancashire were declared the under 11 winners and Holme Valley CC girls from Yorkshire winning the u13 final against Leigh CC.

The growth of girls cricket at  Marple Cricket Club has been rapid over the past couple of years with over 40 girls attending the outdoor training every Friday night.  The club has developed links with Rosehill Primary School and Marple Hall School to help introduce cricket to girls and manage girls teams in local schools competitions.  In addition to this, over 150 girls from local brownie, guide and ranger groups have visited for taster sessions this May.

The next step for the club is the creation of a women's cricket team.  To help recruit players for this,  a fun Prosecco Cricket Night will be held on Friday 21st July where women can get together with their friends to play cricket for the evening.

Girls and women of all abilities and experience are welcome to attend the weekly female only group training sessions, on Friday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm at Bowden Lane.
