“People have apparently been trying to get me a medal for years,” laughed octogenarian Peter Fish after receiving the British Empire Medal for Services to the Elderly in Glossop and Tameside.  “I only found out recently but apparently my neighbour has been putting my name forward for years without telling me.”

Finally it seems that he has been justly recognised for decades of service.  Peter worked for Age Concern in the 1980s and was one of the founders of the Glossop U3A in the mid-nineties where he was instrumental in the move to Bradbury House. He became the U3A Secretary and around the same time he was Choirmaster for The Clarendon Singers who visited the Care Homes, not only the Glossop Area but further afield into Cheshire and Lancashire bringing music to the elderly.  He helped start the Happy Ramblers, a group that is still going strong even though he has retired from it.  Currently, he is co-ordinator of the Glossop Men’s Gang, a monthly get-together lunch for elderly men in the area.

“I had to go to Dukinfield to meet the Mayor for tea with about eight others and tell him about the work I’d done.  Then I went to Manchester Town Hall for a ceremony with the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester where I was presented with the medal, and finally my wife Teresa and I were invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

“Unfortunately it rained so hard that day that we barely saw the Queen as she was bundled up under an umbrella and mostly confined to the Royal Tent.  We gathered in the Refreshment Tent ourselves to avoid the worst of the weather.  It wasn’t just raining, it hammered down all day.”

It wasn’t their first visit to Buckingham Palace however; they had been there many years ago when Peter received an award for his work with Age Concern.

Many people will never get to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace but this couple have been twice.  However they remain modest and Peter just shrugs at the work and dedication he has put in, even though he is justly rather proud of the medal.
