The Society of Marple ArtistsMarpleBrian Ash

The Society of Marple Artists (SMA) began in 1968 when a small group of enthusiastic amateur artists started meeting at one of their houses. Today it has grown to a membership of around one hundred artists of varying skill and experience levels.

The SMA has held an exhibition every year since it began and its 50th anniversary exhibition in 2018 promises to be a very special occasion.

SMA exhibitions are always popular and visitors will be able to enjoy up to 400 exhibits, ranging from 2D paintings to 3D sculptures. Brian Ash, SMA Chair, is confident that this year’s exhibition, will reflect the vast range of artistic talent of society members, many of whom will be on hand to answer queries and discuss their work with visitors.

The SMA still has founding members who remember exhibitions of the 1970s when L. S. Lowry visited. On one of these occasions, he admired one of the exhibits so much that he purchased it. Unfortunately, the cheque he paid with was cashed…it could now well have been worth more than the amount it was made out for.

The 2018 50th SMA exhibition will be held at Marple Methodist Church Hall, Church Lane, Marple, SK6 7AY as follows: Friday 20 April, 10am – 9pmSaturday 21 April, 10am – 5pm

A ticket-only preview of the exhibition will take place on Thursday 19 April. For anyone interested in attending the preview, please contact Steve Abbott on 0161 449 9963.

Entry to the exhibition is free and many of the exhibits are available for purchase. There is disabled access and refreshments are available.
